Exploring 3D Manipulation Techniques for High-Precision Tasks With Digital Twins in Virtual Reality
Tipo de evento: Seminário de Avaliação - Série A
Precise 3D manipulation in virtual reality (VR) is essential for effectively aligning virtual objects, such as ideal CAD models and virtually printed parts from digital twins. However, state-of-the-art VR manipulation techniques have limitations when high levels of precision are required, including the unnaturalness caused by scaled rotations and the significant increase in time due to degree-of-freedom separation in complex tasks. We designed two novel techniques to address these issues: AMP-IT (Adaptive Manipulation for Precise InTeraction), which offers mid-air direct manipulation with an adaptive scaled mapping that provides implicit degree-of-freedom separation, and WISDOM (Widget-based Indirect Scaled mapping with Direct Object Manipulation), which offers a combination of simple Virtual Hand and mid-air indirect manipulation with explicit degree-of-freedom separation. We compared these two techniques against baseline and state-of-the-art manipulation techniques in a controlled experiment. Results indicate that WISDOM and AMP-IT have significant advantages over best-practive techniques regarding task performance, usability, and user preference.
